COP24 – Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change
The 24th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP24) was held between 2 and 15 December in the International Congress Centre in Katowice. In this immense event, attended by nearly 30 000 delegates from all over the world, representatives of the Wood Technology Institute also actively participated.
On 7 December 2018, during a Forest Day, a series of debates and lectures on the role of forests in global climate policy took place in the Polish Pavilion. Among attendees were Małgorzata Golińska, Secretary of State at the Ministry of the Environment, and Andrzej Konieczny, Director General of State Forests. Also present were employees of the Forest Service from all over Poland, as well as the garrison orchestra. The Forest Day was ceremoniously opened by Minister Małgorzata Golińska. Her speech concerned the important role of forests in combating climate change. Next, the Director General of State Forests, Andrzej Konieczny, took the floor, talking about Polish sustainable forest management. Rene Castro, the representative and leader of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) delegation, spoke last.
The second part of the Forest Day, entitled "Heading for a world of prosperity: the use of wood from forests managed in a multifunctional and sustainable manner", was moderated by Zbigniew Karaszewski, PhD (Eng) from the Wood Technology Institute, while Ewa Leszczyszyn, MSc (also from the Wood Technology Institute) gave presentation entitled "Wood materials and products as an important carbon pool” (co-authored with Prof. Ewa Ratajczak, DSc).
