COST Action E44 Conference on 'Broad Spectrum Utilisation of Wood' in Vienna
From 14th to 15th June 2005 a COST Action E44 conference entitled: „Broad Spectrum Utilisation of Wood” took place in Vienna (Austria). The main objective of COST Action E44 ”Wood Processing Strategy” is to increase knowledge necessary to create a wood processing strategy in Europe which would allow to make choices and decisions connected with development of forestry and wood industry. The COST Action will stimulate and manage information essential to build a European wood processing strategy. It is envisaged that it will be founded on four thematic areas:
- wood as a renewable resource,
- broad spectrum utilisation of wood,
- new prospects for utilisation of wood,
- properties of wood products in the end-user phase.
After the first meeting devoted to the subject „Wood as a renewable resource”, which was held at the Vaxjo University in Sweden in autumn 2004, the present conference, which was organized at the Universität für Bodenkultur in Vienna, focuses on „Broad Spectrum Utilisation of Wood”.
Wood processing encompasses three main technological processes which are directly connected with quality-dimension properties of wood: conversion, reduction, cutting or rotary cutting. Integrated processing of forest products may use different strategies so as to integrate processes of wood processing.
During three plenary sessions and an additional poster session the following subjects were brought up:
- quality-dimension properties of wood and its processing,
- economic and consumer parameters,
- wood species and their utilisation.

The conference organizers hope that during interesting sessions significant issues in the wood-processing chain have been discussed and documented.
