Gold Medal with Honourable Mention - IWIS 2012
The sixth edition of an international invention exhibition - The International Warsaw Invention Show (IWIS 2012), organized by Association of Polish Inventors and Rationalizers, the Patent Office of the Republic of Poland and Warsaw University of Technology, was held on October 16th-19th, 2012, at Warsaw University of Technology.
The President of the Republic of Poland - Bronisław Komorowski
took the Honorary Patronage of the exhibition
IWIS is the only international event in Poland related to innovation and inventiveness. The previous edition was attended by innovators from over 20 countries, including Saudi Arabia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Iran, South Korea, Malaysia, Russia, Romania, Slovenia, Taiwan, Ukraine, and Hungary.
More than 280 inventions being an overview of technical achievements, both already implemented and awaiting implementation, were presented at the exhibition.
Fundamental goals of the event are:
- demonstration of scientific achievements of Polish scientists and inventors compared to global solutions,
- facilitation of establishment of contact between inventors and prospect investors,
- familiarization of public opinion with the achievements of Poland in the field of inventiveness and creation of a positive image of Polish science through popularization of those achievements in mass media,
- promotion of innovative attitudes, especially among the youth.
Scientific and research institutions, universities, innovative companies, as well as individual innovators and financial institutions interested investments in innovative products and technologies are invited to participate in the exhibition.
The hot-pressed panel composite made of medium-sized and small-sized hardwood, including material from plantations and agricultural crops, as well as the silicone binder forming network in condensation system, which is used for the production of the composite, both were developed under the project No. NR15 0076 06 financed by the National Centre for Research and Development. This year's edition of the exhibition was attended by the Wood Technology Institute, which, along with Zakład Chemiczny „Silikony Polskie" Sp. z o. o. (Chemical Plant "Polish Silicones" Ltd.), presented an ecological lignocellulosic nanocomposite for construction and furniture industry and a silicone binder for its production. The innovation by Iwona Frąckowiak, Andrzej Idziak, Magdalena Łubkowska, Jarosław Gąsior, Aleksandra Sokołowska, Andrzej Miazga and Rafał Muskus was awarded The Gold Medal with Honourable Mention - IWIS 2012.
Unlike composites commonly offered in the world market, the ecological nanocomposite contains neither formaldehyde nor any other compounds harmful to the environment and human health, which was confirmed by the results of VOC tests carried out by an accredited laboratory. In 2006 the World Health Organization and the International Agency for Research on Cancer considered formaldehyde a carcinogenic compound as regards people (Group 1). Within the EU formaldehyde is currently classified as a category 3-R40 substance. Unfortunately, at present approximately 90% of wood-based panels is manufactured using resins containing formaldehyde.
The new material is fully resistant to microbiological decay and fire retardant. A panel's durability and resistance to moisture is at different levels depending on the technological option, but it can be much higher than that required according to EN 312:2011 standard for all types of particleboards (P2-P7) and according to EN 300:2007 standard.
The developed formaldehyde-free composite is an innovative multi-purpose wood-based panel for application in construction and furniture industry, and for equipping such interiors as kindergartens, schools, hospitals or public buildings.
Research on this innovation was concluded with a patent application filed in the Patent Office of the Republic of Poland, entry no. P. 394926 of May 18th, 2011.
