In June 2016 the Bioenergy Department embarked on the three-year project within the framework of the Strategic Research and Development Program "Environment, Agriculture and Forestry" BIOSTRATEG 2, entitled: „Intelligent systems for breeding and cultivation of wheat, maize and poplar for optimized biomass production, biofuels and modified wood” (CROPTECH).
For the implementation of the tasks performed the project was granted 14 459 093.00 PLN by the National Centre for Research and Development.
Brief of the Project
Average temperature of the atmosphere is steadily increasing due to global warming and leads to changes in the environment on an unprecedented scale. The United Nations forecasts that by 2050 the world’s population will grow by more than three billion people and desert areas will triple. In 2014 the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change warned that the world’s food supply is already jeopardized. “In the last 20 years, particularly for rice, wheat, and corn, there has been a slowdown in the growth rate of crop yields and in some areas yields have stopped growing entirely.” Therefore, this proposal is focused on development and implementation of new technologies and biotechnologies that significantly accelerate and improve the plant breeding procedures that allow to obtain new varieties (lines) of crops and trees better adapted to the ongoing climate changes, that will allow to develop new robotized precision plants phenomics system, new yield and productivity prediction algorithms, that will allow for optimisation and improvements of biofuels production technologies on industrial scale and technologies for wood processing in timber and furniture industry. The implementation of the results of this proposal into industry will have a strong positive impact on several large and medium-size companies, thus on Polish economy growth, its world-wide competitiveness and development.
Scope of research work
Task 1. Precision plants phenomics and development of an algorithm for seed yield and plant biomass productivity prediction
Task 2. Generation of genetically modified poplar line with ameliorated water use efficiency and dry biomass productivity with propagation and cultivation of Populus trichocarpa
Task 3. Industrial application of improved wood from fast growing poplars
Task 4. Alternative ways of biomass processing and waste processing
Task 5. Optimization of bioethanol production technologies from maize seeds
Task 6. Investigation of pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass from maize and poplar
PREPARATION FOR IMPLEMENTATION PHASE
Task 7. Preparation of technical documentation for precise phenomics of crops
Task 8. Preparation for implementation of wood modification processes and floor elements production
Task 9. Preparation of technical documentation of metod implementation for disinfectant dosing
Task 10. Preparation for implementation of second-generation bioethanol production technology from corn residues in the form cobs and straw
Task 11. Preparation of technical documentation of installations producing wood pellets from plantation
The CROPTECH Consortium consists of nine Polish partners: four scientific and five industrial.
