Training in the IKEA Test Lab in Älmhult
From 4th to 6th July 2005 four ITD employees (Jarosław Banecki, PhD, Tomasz Oleszek, Maria Idziak and Piotr Szczęsnowski) participated in training organized by IKEA in Älmhult (Sweden). The training concerned new and currently implemented in the Wood Technology Institute’s laboratory methods for testing the furniture surface which are specified in the IKEA specifications.
The stay in the IKEA of Sweden AB Central Laboratory (IKEA Test Lab) started with a visit to three main divisions of the laboratory: Textile Materials Testing Section, Furniture Testing Section and Chemical Testing Section. Next the stage of implementation of new methods for testing of surface and edges of furniture elements in the ITD’s laboratory was discussed.
Another day of the stay it was an intensive training which included carrying out many tests of surface resistance. Trainers paid special attention to the specific elements of test procedures, the way of assessing changes of the surface and lighting conditions during the assessment. Theoretical and practical preparation of the training participants for carrying out particular tests was also evaluated.
A significant element of the training was comparison between the IKEA Test Lab and the Institute’s laboratory and exchange of experience in the scope of the way of carrying out some tests and assessing changes of the surface. The large experience of the ITD employees in carrying out such furniture surface tests as: testing of surface resistance to abrasion or testing of laminated coating resistance to cracking, was fully appreciated.
On the last day of the stay in Älmhult test stations for carrying out corrosive tests with the use of salt vapor or deionized water and full-sized test station for carrying out tests of furniture surface resistance to damp and friction were showed to the training participants.
