Consumption of wood materials in households and public utility places

This article presents results of research into consumption of wood materials in households and public utility places, that is in the sphere connected with trade, operation of offices, hotels, schools, hospitals and other structures, as well as their surroundings such as parks, gardens, playgrounds and areas intended for sport and recreation in Poland. For the first time in Poland quantification of consumption of wood materials and products in this area was done using the model indices method.
In line with the aim of the study consumption of wood materials was calculated for two consumption categories: production consumption (by domestic wood industry) and final consumption (by domestic end-users); in the abovementioned case exports of finished products was taken into consideration (as well as the "outflow" of wood materials in this form).
The study confirmed that households and public utility places create a significant demand for various wood products and materials used therein.
According to calculations done using the model indices method, 6.1 million m3 of various wood materials was used in manufacture of products, which are used in the abovementioned area, in 2004 (production consumption), and this figure accounted for 37% of the total consumption of wood materials in the production of wood finished products. Particleboards dominated the structure of wood materials consumption (3.2 million m3) and sawnwood was also important (1.8 million m3). The major part of wood materials was consumed in furniture production (4.4 million m3) and the production of wooden garden products came in second (0.8 million m3).
Final consumption of wood materials in households and public utility places, that is production consumption minus the volume of consumption in exported finished products, was 2.0 million m3 in 2004. It means that 4.1 million m3 of wood materials was exported in the form of various wood products. The most significant differences were observed in consumption of particleboards (by 2.3 million m3) and sawnwood (by 1.1 million m3).

The sizes and volume of the unedged saw-timber depend on the log cutting method and the form of the outer surface of the log. This paper presents data from investigations aimed at estimating the influence of methods for cutting logs parallel with the longitudinal axis and parallel with the generatrix on the formation of the taper coefficient and the volume of unedged boards.

Thermal utilization of oak logs in a heating boiler working with low thermal output

Thermal utilization of oak waste wood was investigated in a 25 kW heat power domestic heating boiler, which was situated in the laboratory heat station which belongs to the Division of Heating, Air Conditioning and Air Protection of Poznan University of Technology. The boiler was connected to the water heat storage with the help of mixing and piping device. Boiler water can be cooled in the heat exchanger with fan located on the roof of the heating station, near the steel insulated chimney of 200mm inner diameter and 8.5 m high. Water can also transfer the heat to the heating installation in the house of wooden construction, type DREWBUD, of about 150 m2 of living area. In the heating station there is also another boiler with the same thermal output but of different construction. The investigated boiler was the uncontrolled one, which means that air combustion stream was regulated manually (with the help of electronic regulator changing the fan rotation) during observations of temperature value and flame color in the combustion chamber. At the same time oxygen, carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides concentrations in flue gases in the chimney were observed as well. Before the measurement, which lasted only 135 minutes, the boiler was preheated but during the investigations it was working with low thermal output (5.8 kW mean value). Thermal utilization ought to be performed in a boiler in two steps: pyrolisis and wood gas combustion, but in case of low thermal output (caused by low temperature value in some places of the combustion chamber) thermal utilization transforms into grate combustion. Sometimes the temperature in the pyrolisis region was higher than the temperature in the combustion area and thermal utilization took form of unsatisfactory grate combustion. In these conditions carbon monoxide concentration was very high - between 8836 and 25339 mg/Nm3 calculated for dry gas normalized to 6% oxygen concentration in flue gases (mean value 177441mg/Nm3). The boiler heat efficiency was low, slightly above 50%. By a relatively low temperature value in the combustion chamber but a high value of air excess rate, the mean value of nitrogen oxides concentration was high, 428 mg/Nm3, and the value of dust was low, 53 mg/Nm3. Such results were obtained because the boiler thermal output was low and the combustion chamber was not completely filled with logs. The air stream regulation was also not adequate. Thermal utilization process described above is sometimes found in practice when the atmosphere temperature values are about 0°C and the boiler is working without the help of water heat storage.

The aim of this work was to examine the influence of the height of the cut layer on the forces and work of cutting in milling of laminated particleboards. The feeding force at the crack initiation and the maximum feeding force were measured, as well as the maximum of normal force. Specific work of cutting, specific work of new surface creation and specific work of chip deformation were calculated on the basis of measured forces.

Possibilities of determination of the quality of laminated boards machining

Contemporary used solutions for machines and tools for machining of wood-based panels allow far gone automation of the cutting process. However, the elimination of human factor has its limits. Despite many attempts the problem of determination of the quality of laminated board edge still remains unsolved. There is some information about the possibilities of on-line measuring of the quality of the edge at machining process using contact method. This information was announced by German science centers almost 20 years ago. A non-contact method seems to provide a better way to describe the quality of the edge. Research aimed at construction of a prototype of the device using the above-mentioned methods is conducted in the Department of Woodworking and Basis of Machine Construction at the Agricultural University of Poznan.

The article is devoted to a study of a novel special wooworking tool - the micro-thin circular saws. As a result of transfer of funds for microprocessor engineering a measuring device allowing to study the effect of variation of depth of the instrument on the fundamental indexes: values of cutting powers, width of cut and energy content of sawing process, was developed.

The Internet provides small to medium-sized enterprises in the wood industry with new possibilities of both company management and stronger influence on the market. The goal of the research was a poll-based evaluation of the Internet use for a company growth as well as verification of management instruments used by company owners in selected wood industry sectors with regard to the company size.

Status and development trends of the plywood industry

The plywood industry has a significant place in the forest and forest products sector of the Russian Federation. A dynamic development is characteristic of the plywood industry. In 2005 plywood output in Russia accounted for 2556 thousand m3 and increased 2.7 times against 1995. In the same period the exports of plywood increased 2.3 times. In future further growth of plywood output and domestic consumption is forecasted.

Another international congress concerning coatings intended for protection (prolongation of service life) of wood from external and internal factors was organized in October 2006. 34 papers, which covered many issues including these connected with new methods of wood modification and development of new methods for testing the resistance of lacquer coatings, were presented. The matter of coatings' performance was also addressed.

The Economic Forum is the name of cyclic conferences organized by the Department of Wood Industries Economics and Organization at the August Cieszkowski Agricultural University of Poznan. These conferences, which concern issues crucial for the integration of forestry and wood industries, are attended by representatives of scientific centers from Croatia, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Ukraine and Poland. The final deliverable of these conferences is publication of an international annual the Intercathedra.
