The Wood Preservation Laboratory conducts research on pro-ecological wood preservatives, which would be effective and characterised by a low toxicity for the environment, and on the influence of the structure of biocides, including ionic liquids, on the physicochemical and functional properties of these preservatives. Research concerns the interaction fungi-biocides-wood, the natural resistance of wood and lignocellulosic materials to decay by fungi, the evaluation of biocide and protective agent effectiveness, bonding with wood, chemical analyses of wood preservatives and their biodegradation. The department implements new methods of the assessment of lignocellulosic substrate infestation by microorganisms and investigates the influence of blue stain fungi and other discolouring fungi on the wood properties. The Laboratory employees are authors of numerous patents regarding preservatives for wood and wood materials.
